SC declined to entertain a petition seeking uniform education system as "One Nation One Education Board"with common syllabus

New Delhi, July 17, 2020: The Supreme Court on Friday declined to entertain a petition which sought a uniform education system as "One Nation One Education Board" with a common syllabus and curriculum across the country for children aged between 6-14 years.

The Supreme Court Bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud also declined to admit the plea which suggested merging ICSE and CBSE, to enable a "One Nation One Education Board" with a common syllabus and curriculum.

The Supreme Court Justice D Y Chandrachud said "How can you ask the court to merge one board with the other? These are not the functions of the court".  Justice Chandrachud further observed that "our students are already burdened with heavy school bags on their shouders. Why do you want to add to their burden by adding more books?".

The Supreme Court was of the view that it was not appropriate for it to interfere in such matters, since the plea fell within the domain of a policy decision.

However, the Supreme Court Bench granted the petitioner, Advocate and BJP leader Ashwani Kumar Upadhyay, liberty to approach the appropriate authority with his Petition as a representation.
